PRACTICE TIP
As the weather gets cooler (yay – I love it!) we need to take care of our body and make sure we warm up properly. This can be with specific warm up exercises such as tiger/cat and circling the spine in tiger/cat, or it can be through salutes. If you go straight to salutes, make sure you respect the body limits as it warms. Bend the knees a little, soften the spine, don't sink too deeply in vira 1 immediately, rest in the dip or take a tiger/cat option for the first salute or so. Try to float the body and keep connected to the breath. Full conscious breaths (not too vigorous, even a bit slow) can warm the body quickly. If you have particular injuries, ask your teacher for a warm up that you could do for a couple of minutes before class. Spend the last 5 minutes before class starts relaxing, letting go of tension and distracting thoughts and connecting to body and breath so you can be morepresent and in tune in your practice. One of the areas that gets more congested than usual as we curl up to get warm is the thoracic spine and ribs. Tiger/cat and circling can help loosen this area up, as well as spending time allowing the breath to fully deepen, using the whole lung. (nb – even the breath needs warming up so take 4-5 breaths getting a little fuller each time). Begin in the belly, relax the diaphragm and allow the breath to move up into the upper lung. When the breath inflates the chest fully, the inter-costal muscles get some release enabling better breathing, more resilient ribs and easing thoracic congestion. A good strong pat between the shoulder blades can also help (ask your teacher to show you!). The bonus is, once we warm up, we can often have a more invigorating practice in the cooler months. Take care and enjoy!!
SUFI STORY
A man heard that if he went to a certain place in the desert at dawn and stood facing a distant mountain, his shadow would point to a great buried treasure. The man left his cabin before the first light of day and at dawn was standing in the designated place. His shadow shot out long and thin over the surface of the sand. “How fortunate,” he thought as he envisioned himself with great wealth. He began digging for the treasure. He was so involved with his work that he did not notice the sun climbing in the sky and shortening his shadow, and then he noticed it. It was now almost half of the previous size. He became worried and started digging again in the new spot. Hours later, at noon, the man again stood in the designated spot. He cast no shadow. He became very much worried. He started crying and weeping – the whole effort lost. Now, where is the place?? Then there passed a Sufi Master, who started laughing at him and said, “Now exactly the shadow is pointing to the treasure. It is within you!”
