Namaste Yogis and Yoginis

It is said that as at the heart of all great philosophies there is the desire to move from suffering (dukkah) to happiness (sukkah). I see this reflected in the world in so many different ways. Sometimes as part of a conscious path such as yoga, meditation or charity; but many times through misguided attempts such as alchohol, drugs or violence. Whatever the method, I believe this instinct towards feeling better in some form is at the heart of all actions. The Buddhist tradition teaches that when you truly recognise all beings, just like yourself, are trying to find happiness and escape suffering, the mind of compassion (Boddhicitta) arises. I have found that in the moments I can truly recognise this, my anger, judgement or frustration with the other melts away, I cannot feel it. Then I also benefit from the compassion, as I instantly feel more at peace. It is a wonderful gift this teaching. Donna Farhi, in her book “Bringing Yoga to Life” states: “Like a bird who instinctively navigates thousands of miles each year to nest in the same branch in the same tree, something in us is always seeking this place of homecoming.” This same instinct towards home, peace or happiness is also the motivation that keeps us coming back to our path of practice. Even when it gets tough, or doesn't feel as good as usual, or we are feel bored with it, something brings us back. Something that knows instinctively this is the path home, the path to a better place. The path is not always easy but knowing where it is taking us can somehow make it feel a little better along the way. In this month of St Patrick, I leave you with this Irish blessing for the path:

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again,
may God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Om Shanti
(peace)

COMING UP

Saturday March 13Shoulderstand workshop.

As you move into more advanced classes like General and Level 2, you will be introduced to the practice of inversions. As we can’t always teach the technique in class, we are offer workshops to give instruction on how to practice inversions safely, how to modify and how to move towards them. Benefits & mythology may be included. This month we are teaching Salamba Sarvangasana or Shoulderstand. The workshop is beneficial for L1 students who may want to learn how to progress to generals, and also for more experienced students who want to refine their understanding of the practice and enhance it.1-3.15pm, $20. Bookings preferred as places limited.

Sunday March 28 – Kirtan night, 6-7.30pm, gold coin donation welcome

Our Kirtan nights have turned into really beautiful evenings. At our last evening, I stopped at one point and thought “aren't we so lucky”. Beautiful voices and spirits, and a truly uplifting experience, right here in our own backyard!. Basically Kirtan is to “sing praise” or “sing God's name” but don't worry if you are more secular, the chants can also be considered to awaken the aspects of consciousness that the deities symbolise including wisdom, compassion and courage. You don't have to sing if you don't want to, some people like to listen and absorb the chants around them, but you are encouraged of course, no matter what your voice is like!

April 2-5 Easter Long Weekend – Please see the noticeboard or website for class times. They will also be on the answering machine over the weekend.

PRACTICE TIPS

In yoga there are two important terms vairagya and abhasya sometimes defined as observation and application, or detachment and practice. We are reminded to be present, to observe the effects of the practice and to observe what might be appropriate for the next breath/action, and then to apply the wisdom of that observation in our action. We are reminded to detach from the desire for a particular outcome in our practice, and most importantly we are reminded simply to practice. I have seen some amazing changes in a few students lately, not from anything particular, just from the simple process of practicing without a need to achieve. It has been truly beautiful.

WHAT CLASS IS BEST FOR ME??

Our Beginners classes are designed to be gentle, supportive and informative. We run them at a level not as a course, so that you can attend as a complete beginner or as a regular practitioner who enjoys the pace. Many experienced students drop in to beginners classes to refresh the basics and reconnect to the foundation of their practice. As an experienced student, it feels luxurious to be in the class and feel so spacious in your practice.

Our Level 1 classes are designed to progress the practice. They are a little more dynamic and flowing, but still give information about technique and practice, and offer gentler options. They are open to a broad range of students as there are no advanced postures such as inversions or full backbends, but they still offer enough challenge to develop your practice. Some students stay at this level for years, others never leave, there is so much to gain from them.

General Level classes are basically Level 1 classes with more advanced options. Inversions and full backbends may be included for experienced students attending. These postures can sometimes be taught in these classes.

Level 2 and Ashtanga are our most advanced classes. Students are expected to be able to self monitor and modify when necessary. Advance postures such as inversions, full backbends and lotus will be included in the practice. Students with any injury or condition are advised to talk with your teachers before attending these classes, and make sure you let your teacher know should you injure yourself in any way. These classes are rewarding but challenging.

Self Practice is designed to develop insight and independence as a practitioner, and the possibility of some specific input into your practice. Students from Level 1 upwards can attend these classes.

Privates offer an excellent way to progress your practice and have specific input to your specific body, mind and needs through one on one tuition. Even one every now and again can offer insight specific to your practice that we may not be able to give in a class situation.

Workshops offer more detailed instruction and a chance to focus or go deeper in your practice.

NAMASTE
