THOUGHT FOR TODAY
|
"Yoga means union. The union of the individual soul with the universal spirit is yoga. But this is too abstract a notion to be easily understood, so for our level of understanding I say yoga is the union of the body with the mind, and of mind with the soul." - BKS Iyengar

Namaste, Yogis and Yoginis
|
As some of you may know, this year I have committed as a student to a 12-month business mentoring program under the direction of Perry Mardon. All I can say so far is WOW, the experience has been so enlightening! I have had to adopt a beginners mindset completely (a good thing to do from time to time).
During the past three months of the program I have come to understand and experience a twofold approach to living a purposeful life: |
|
| |
|
|
1. Know your goals, vision and values Knowing your goals and values keeps you on track and gives you the motivation required to keep going with your practices (whatever they may be), and the fire to overcome reactions like sloth, fear, overwhelm and laziness that seem to arise when we challenge ourselves to grow. Goals must be based on your highest values and be both achievable and measurable. You must know what reaching these goals looks like, so take lots of time and go over them again and again.
2. Maintain observation of the self, constantly. Observing the self helps to keep it real. (Perry uses the term sub-personalities, some call it conditioned thought patterns, and in Sanskrit we use the term vasanas – impressions in the mind (samskaras) that have been repeated and deepened into habitual patterns.) Maintaining your observer mind allows you to recognise where your reactions come from, draw back and make choices from a place of centre, not react from a place of habit. It saves a lot of time, energy and pain, and although it takes practice and commitment it is worth it!
We can apply these goals in our asana practice. One of the goals of yoga is to heal and balance the body. Overwork in the postures goes against this, but still we do it – why? Often we have habitual patterns in the mind that come from past conditioning like "No pain, no gain," or "Working harder is better," or "I have to reach my toes to succeed". Using our observer mindset, we can notice when these thoughts come up and pull back by choosing to work in harmony with the body, not force it. Our vision of a balanced body and mind gives us the extra energy needed to override the habitual thoughts and get closer to our goals.

| DR HARRE HARREN – CONCERT REVIEW |
|
Usually we know our guest teachers well and invite them knowing the wisdom they have to share. Dr Harren was a completely new experience for us, but we loved him! With an astrologist father and music teacher mother, Dr Harren brought the best of both worlds to his recent workshop at the Yoga Centre. Providing Vedic astrology readings for 3 days, enchanting us with his voice at the concert, and sharing music as a tool of healing in his workshop – everyone felt and received a different gift from the event. Some had amazing experiences during the chant he sang to awaken the chakras, others resonated with the heart healing chant, and my personal favourite was the amazing Shiva chant.
For those who missed out, we hope to have Dr Harren back next year. If you would like to make the most out of an astrology session next time make sure you get your questions ready before attending. The centre also plans to get in some musicians to complement his beautiful voice at the next workshop. Dr Harren has left behind a range of CD’s to suit a range of desires – from relaxation to romantic, music for children, pets, health – there is something for everyone. Check them out in our shop.

| 5 MINUTES WITH… KATH |
|
 |
Kath's warmth, caring nature and ready smile are well loved by all at the GCYC. She shares a bit more of herself here.
Q: How did you come to yoga? I was at a job interview and I met Kameron and Suzanne there. I found out they were yoga teachers. I noticed they had a lot of energy, and what they were saying sounded good, so I signed up for a beginners course Suzanne was teaching, and I loved it so much I’ve been here ever since, doing the teacher training 12 years ago.
Q: How has yoga helped you? It’s very practical on a daily basis. It’s really helped me get to know myself, and my truth. It has helped me meet the challenging times and relate better to people on a day to day level. Physically I am much healthier, and am rarely sick these days. It also helps keep the aging process at bay!
Q: Can you give any tips to people wanting to get more out of their practice? Listen to your body, practice regularly, and come to the Gold Coast Yoga Centre of course!
Q: What changes have you made in your life since discovering yoga? My whole life changed as I left working in an office to re-train as a yoga teacher. I love it. I have found I can let things go more easily, and feel more peaceful in my life. Finding my truth was so important to me, and now that I have, I really want to help others find their truth.
Q: What else is important in your life? My son and my husband, time to myself, the rest of my family, music, my home - creating a peaceful environment & working in the garden.
Please feel free to forward the Gold Coast Yoga Centre newsletter to friends who you feel would benefit.
