Beginners guidelines for your safety & well-being
MEALS
Allow three to four hours after a heavy meal, one hour after fruit or very light meal. Food can be taken half an hour after asanas. It's better not to drink to much water during practice.
CLEANSING
Practice is deeper and safer with an empty bladder and bowels. Taking a shower before and/or after practice refreshes the body and mind.
FRAGRANCE FREE ZONE
The yoga centre is a fragrance free zone. Please avoid use of all products containing fragrances e.g. perfumes, deoderants, anti-perspirants, hair care products, moisturisers and cosmetics. Many health conditions are implicated with the use of frangrances.
CLOTHING
Wear comfortable clothes that allow you to see how your body moves. Please remove watches, bracelets and necklaces.
PRECAUTIONS
Let the teacher know if you have a specific condition, disease or limitation before class.Often they will be happy to advise you how to work with it or what poses will affect you.
SUN
Practicing asanas after prolonged sun exposure is not advised.
MENSTRUATION
If menstruating, rest often, avoid back bends, twists, abdominal contractions and inversions as they will affect your menstruation. (More information available)
PREGNANT
Let the teacher know. Most poses can be done in the first three months of pregnancy. (More information available)
BREATHING
Breathing is always through the nose unless specified. Holding the breathe or undue force is not recommended.
EYES
In the beginning usually keep the eyes open, to feel deeper close them.
TALKING
A sense of humour is an asset during practice, however excessive talking during class distracts other people from their experiencing.
TEACHING OR HELPING
Please do not assist or teach another student in class unless asked by the teacher.
SORENESS
As with all activities that your body is not used to there may be some soreness, this is perfectly natural. Check to see that you are not over-working the body or forcing stretches. Much soreness can come from this, so be sensitive & compassionate & do not compete with other students.
Your success in yoga depends on the quality of your practice.
Effects of practice
What appears stiff, can become flexible with practice. What appears weak, can become strong with practice. What appears diseased, can become healthy with practice. What appears clumsy, can become graceful with practice. What appears a vice, can become a virtue with practice. What appears old, can become ageless with practice. What appears ignorant, can become enlightened with practice.
