Namaste yogis and yoginis!

Spring is upon us, how glorious! A time of unfolding, awakening, remembering. Everything seems new again. Yet it is important in this time of joy and enthusiasm not to let our past experience go altogether. We know that if we go barrelling into cleaning and exercising like crazy we are going to pay the consequences!! Gently unfold into the new season, after the slumberous winter night, stretch softly as you re-awaken your senses. In class, begin to increase the strength of your practice gradually, and remember to take into account the body’s natural tendency to spring clean itself of all the toxins accumulated during less active winter. Tendons can be a little sensitive and muscles a little tight, and sinuses blocked, so increase effort with awareness. Allow the practice to uplift you. Find joy in the harmony of movement and breath, and work harder later!!
Hot tip: Neti pots are great for sinus probs!

Mark’s travels: After a 2 week Spanish intensive, Mark & Kat have left Buenos Aires “a beautiful and bustling city that goes 24 hours, restaurants and all”, spent time with their good friend in Santiago, had a weekend in a village on the coast and are having fun practicing their Spanish and being tourists until heading off to Peru in a couple of weeks. Why black mats? As well as providing stablility, black mats also protect your mat from wear or tear on the carpet, and the carpet from little bits of mat!! At the end of class we give them a wipe down with a cloth from the bucket. Squeeze out as much water as you can so they dry quickly.Black mats are also totally fine to use on their own, the only downfall is they’re a bit chilly in winter savasana, but this is easily remedied with a blanket underneath when you relax!

A little quiet; we love that you get to make new friends and catch up with old friends here, but please keep chat to the reception/outside area. Sometimes the quietness of the yoga space is a necessary part of letting go and preparing for your practice. Similarly, please try and enter the space quietly, the crack of a mat being whipped out or the thud of blankets can be quite jarring, the opposite of our aim. Aim to be in class and on your mat at least 5 mins before class. Of course life sometimes has other plans and you’re always welcome even when a little late, but this helps minimise disturbance and keep the changeover between classes smooth. Thank you!

Fragrance free zone! Perfumes, oils and any strong odours can trigger off nausea, headaches and discomfort in breathing so please be aware and keep fragrances of any kind to a minimum.

There is a lovely story of the couple who were arguing about a classical piece of music. He was describing it as tempestuous and moody, she was disagreeing saying it had a melodious feel. An onlooker asked what instrument they heard playing. “The piano of course” said he, “no, no it’s the violin”said she. “Both are playing” said the onlooker. He then instructed the man to listen to the violin and the woman to focus on the piano. “Ahh” exclaimed the man, “I can understand how you think it’s melodious”. “Ahh” said the woman “the piano is moody isn’t it!” So you see how opening up to new perspectives you can double the experience not lose it!

Too much emphasis is placed on the posture. Remember the body is strengthened and opened to support the spine and nervous system, this in turn helps to have better control of the breath, which then stabilises the mind, and when the mind is stable and relaxed the consciousness expands and has more influence, which then makes the body feel stronger and freer, calming the nervous system which has a positive influence on the breath which calms the mind which frees up the consciousness which…….you get what I mean, it’s an integrated system! All parts are important and when accessed equally allow a flow of practice and evolution that is free from effort! Doesn’t that sound great? Try to notice if there is a lot of effort in your practice, pull back a little from the physical and let the other parts do their job, you will have a richer more integrated experience of your postures and less chance of injury. Remember “asana”, usually translated as “posture”, literally means “comfortable seat” implying a degree of stability and ease that supports your experience.

Hot tip: Most injuries occur as we move into or leave a pose, perhaps because we think we’re not in the pose at that time and let our guard down. The entry and exit to a pose is very important, maintain awareness 100% of the time you’re on the mat and reduce the risk of injury dramatically.

Ecological Spirituality: To act in the world as if it were a sanctuary is to make it reverential and sacred. What the universe becomes depends on you. Treat it like a machine and it becomes a machine. Treat it like a divine place and it becomes a divine place. A deep comprehension of ecology is reverence in action, is a deep identification with the beauty of life pulsating through the universe until we become part of it. Thus understanding becomes empathy. Empathy becomes universal reverence. This reverence is a form of spirituality. – Henryk Skolimowski
